Filtered water bottles are one of the best backpacking water filter systems you can use.  When you’re camping or backpacking in the great outdoors, you need a supply of fresh water.  The last thing you want is to get sick from something you ate or drank.  Being able to filter and clean your own water helps to prevent dehydration and illness.

Using filtered water bottles to purify your water is a great alternative to chemical water treatment, which is also in widespread use.  While chemicals, such as iodine, are effective at cleaning water while out in the wild, filtered water bottles have some advantages over chemical water purification.

Filtered water bottles – the taste of clean water

The main advantages of filtered water bottles are speed and taste, or to be more accurate, “no taste.”  A filtered water bottle filters the dangerous contaminants and particles out of the water, as the water is passing through the filter.  This is a very quick process, if you are filtering water for one or two people, or for cooking over a campfire or camping stove.  Once the water has passed through the filter in the filtered water bottle, it is ready to drink.

The lack of taste is another advantage of filtered water bottles.  Ordinarily, water that has passed through the filter in a filtered water bottle does not have any added taste.  There can be a minor exception to this, as some filtered water bottles have iodine on the filter as an added way to remove contaminants.  In that case, there could be a minor iodine taste.  But, generally, there is no taste to water that has been filtered through a filtered water bottle.

Filtered water bottles are also a faster way to purify water.  Boiling water takes time, as you have to gather wood, build a fire, etc.  And, you have to wait for the water to boil for several minutes.  Chemicals, such as iodine, are also used for purifying water.  In addition to the chemical water purification leaving the water with a different taste, you also usually have to wait 30 to 60 minutes after adding the chemical before you can drink the water.  So, for lack of taste and for speed, filtered water bottles make for one of the best camping water filter methods you can use.

Another important advantage of using filtered water bottles is the minimal impact on the environment.  If you carry plastic water bottles, the odds of one of them being improperly disposed of are high.  Whether it’s by accident, or on purpose, many empty plastic water bottles end up being left in the woods.  Using the best backpacking water filter you can find will avoid the possibility of leaving the empty plastic bottles in nature.
