No bottled water lives up to the promises we’ve been made by the big bottled water marketing industry. They rake in millions of dollars per year by convincing us that we should buy and drink their water. But, there are many reasons why you should consider saying no to bottled water. You can get cleaner, healthier water in a variety of ways that do not involve the bottled water industry. Learning about big bottled water’s claims is the first step in saying “no bottled water.”

No bottled water – it is not any healthier
If you believe the marketing departments of big bottled water manufacturers, you will be young and vibrant if you drink their water. And, it comes only from the most pristine streams high in the mountains. The image doesn’t match reality. It’s just water. Bottled water is a huge business, but it isn’t any healthier for you than the alternatives. And, it’s one of the most ecologically unsound sources of water. No bottled water lives up to the hype.

No bottled water – it costs too much money
If you do the math, bottled water is very profitable for the big bottled water companies. But, those profits come from consumers. Gallon for gallon, bottled water is cheaper to produce than soda. It’s even cheaper than gasoline. Yet, consumers still spend millions of dollars per year on bottled water. Especially in light of the global economic downturn, people should say no to bottled water and rely on cheaper water sources.

No bottled water – it wastes landfill space
The big bottled water industry is responsible for over one million tons of plastic waste annually. The manufacturing process required to make that much plastic uses up almost fifty million gallons of oil per year. Most plastic bottles are thrown away and not recycled. Think about how much landfill space would be saved if millions of people said no bottled water and stopped buying and drinking it. And, think about the amount of oil that would not be used up making the plastic bottles that are no longer needed.

The negatives of supporting the big bottled water industry by continuing to buy and use their product clearly outweigh whatever positives there may be. Don’t keep supporting them with your hard-earned money. Switch to tap. Get a filtered water bottle or a whole house water filtration system if you need to. But, say no to bottled water from now on.
